Dress codes that seem draconian are apparently more “universal” than we think.
A TikTokker named Alexa discovered that the fashion police aren’t limited to Disney after she was flagged for wearing a T-shirt at Universal Studios Theme Park in Orlando, Florida.
In the controversial clip, which boasts over a million views, the park-goer is seen wearing a black T-shirt by ethical clothing company CHNGE. The slogan was “women don’t owe you s – – t”.
The theme park’s fashion cops didn’t seem to appreciate her choice of outfit.
“Apparently you can’t wear CHNGE shirts lol,” Alexa wrote in the caption, noting that park staff confiscated the article of clothing and wouldn’t let her simply “put a jacket on top.”
A follow-up video showed Alexa handing the incendiary item to a security guard, after which she is given a card with the words “restricted item” as a coat check.
At the end of her visit, she received her T-shirt.
According to the theme park’s website, visitors are not allowed to wear “clothes that may incite a disturbance or display offensive language or content.”
However, TikTok commentators considered the move to be heavy handed.
“Wait, can you dress code at Universal?” exclaimed one commenter in disbelief. “That’s too weird for me, lol.”
“That’s crazy!” declared another.
“They wouldn’t take my shirt,” insisted a third.
One even asked if Alexa would wear the same top to a Disney theme park, to which she replied, “Yes, and I’ve had to.” [wear] this shirt for about a year – it’s my normal rotation.
Incidentally, Disney seems considerably less diligent about guests’ fashion choices than one might think.
While many people have filmed themselves getting “Mouse” arrested for wearing inappropriate clothing at Disney parks, until recently, the park would simply let people cover it up with a complimentary T-shirt.
However, The Happiest Place on Earth apparently removed this policy after influencers allegedly started wearing NSFW clothing in parks so they could earn free tees.
