A traveler took to social media to discuss why other passengers on flights aren’t disposing of their waste properly – and shared a way to fix the problem.
Posted on the r/SouthwestAirlines forum, the note was titled, “Favorite trick for people who put trash in seat pockets.”
The user said he or she witnessed an “alarming amount of people” not handing their trash over to flight attendants to collect before landing.
“While we’re waiting to disembark, I’ll mention, ‘Hey, I think you left your AirPods in the hamper pocket,’ which forces them to accept the trash,” the person wrote.
The user added, “4 times I’ve done this, 2 times they got trashed, once the guy said, ‘I don’t own AirPods’ and the last guy said it was none of his business.”
“Just a suggestion that has a 50% success rate so far,” the post said.
Fox News Digital reached out to Southwest Airlines for comment.
Users took to the comment section of the post to discuss the issue.
“They have to go through a garbage heap, just like they do a church fundraiser – for the same reason. Blame people to fill it up as it goes by. Problem solved,” one person suggested.
“There will always be idiots/stupid/lowlifes who don’t care,” said another.
The same person added: “Often [it’s] the same people who will complain when they get on and find the trash they missed.”
One Redditor commented: “Not me, but someone I used to work with… Coming to pick up trash, the guy has a stack of newspapers in his seat pocket. “Hey, is it trash, or are you going to keep it?” He: ‘I’ll keep it’.
“Well, we land, the guy leaves, leaving the newspaper,” the person added.
Continuing the story, the user wrote, “FA [flight attendant]now fixing the plane, sees this, grabs them all, runs to the plane and through the terminal, shouting, ‘YOU FORGOT THE NEWSPAPER !! YOU SAID YOU WANT TO KEEP HIM, IT MUST BE IMPORTANT TO YOU!!’ until she caught the boy and returned his letter.’
“Passive-aggressive communication at its best,” said one user.
Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the “View From the Wing” blog, told Fox News Digital that trash is often scattered in seat pockets and left on the floor.
“Increasingly, carriers spend little time cleaning between flights. They don’t schedule planes with enough time on the ground to do that — and when a flight runs late, it’s one of the first things that gets cut,” Leff said.
It’s important, he noted, that passengers at least pass their trash to the flight attendants as they go down the aisle to collect it.
“Cleaning up after ourselves is a basic starting point for civil society,” Leff said.
“You should do it in your seat on the plane, as long as the airline makes it easy enough, going down the aisle with a bag to collect the waste and giving you enough time to collect it – and you should do it in the cinema too,” said Leff.
“Don’t leave those bags of popcorn on the floor,” Leff added.
“Take them to the bins on the way out. It’s only a few meters.”
