A woman spent a year saving up to buy tickets to Taylor Swift’s final Era’s Tour show – by recycling bottles and cans.
Katherine McKenzie, 31, became a Taylor Swift fan after the popularity of The Wind’s 2023 tour led her to delve deeper into the artist’s discography.
Katherine started recycling plastic bottles and metal cans for free change in November last year.
In just 12 months, she managed to save $905, but the rising cost of resold tickets put her just shy of the $1,045 minimum needed.
However, just when all seemed lost, Katherine heard from her sister-in-law’s friend, who was able to offer her two $11.15 limited-run tickets to the final show of the tour.
Katherine, a cat carer in Victoria, Canada, said: “It was such a wonderful twist of fate.
“I worked so hard and looked forward to the experience for a whole year.”
Katherine came up with the idea after remembering a time from her childhood where she did a similar scheme.
Katherine said: “In fifth grade I was totally obsessed with Elvis and my mom said if I could save money for my plane ticket we could go to Memphis.
“When I was a kid, there were limited ways to save money, so I thought I’d recycle bottles and cans at factories where they paid money to deliver them.
“I saved for months and months and finally saved enough for us to go.”
Katherine started with some friends who helped her by giving her plastic bottles and empty cans
After four months, Katherine found out she was pregnant, but that didn’t stop her and she continued.
Katherine said: “It didn’t take me long to decide to go ahead with the plan.
“I knew I would be heavily pregnant at the time of the concert, but that didn’t stop me.
“It changed my bulking tactics, though, as I knew I wouldn’t be as active until the end of my pregnancy.
“I reached out to a neighborhood Swiftie group on Facebook when I was still mobile and asked if anyone had any junk they’d be willing to give me.
“The response was overwhelming and I was soon making weekly trips collecting everyone’s rubbish, organizing the recycling and then taking it to the factory.”
In 12 months, Katherine saved $905, but the rising cost of resold tickets meant she didn’t have enough.
But luckily, Catherine’s sister-in-law’s friend had spare tickets and she was able to buy two $11.15 tickets for the last show of the tour.
Katherine said: “It was so disappointing to think it wouldn’t have worked at all, so I’m glad I went with my sister.”
A good portion of the remaining money went towards merchandise during the concert.
Katherine said: “We spent a total of probably $208 on merchandise that night.
“The rest of the money will go towards our savings for a deposit on a house in Vancouver and likely to boost our new arrival due on New Year’s Day!”
