Sending friends date invitations can often be challenging.
The busy Christmas period rarely helps matters.
Will they respond? Will they cancel at the last minute?
A mother has shared her personal concern – people who say “I’ll decide closer to the time”.
“Bloody Rude”
“This happened twice this week. I’ve invited people over for lunch after Christmas. They told me that they would like to play it by ear,” she said.
“It’s so rude.”
Taking part in a mother’s forum, she writes about how inconvenient it is, especially when the time off work over Christmas is so limited.
“I’m stuck now until you make a decision and I can’t make other plans with my (limited) annual leave,” she said.
“If I’m not good enough for you to make money on a day off, then fine – just decline the invitation – but it’s rude to put me in a position where I’m now stuck keeping the day for you.”
She doesn’t think she should be kept waiting.
βIt’s just so polite!
“I absolutely see that people can be in a position where they expect to hear back from the family they visit,” she added later.
But there’s a simple solution: “Either say so and ask for the missing information, or if that’s not possible, then just decline the invitation.”
“Hope for a better offer”
Frustrated mom comment section split.
Some said it was a habit they often found themselves doing.
“I often say, can we play it by ear, because I have two small children who get sick,” admitted one mother.
Some suggested it’s not worth highlighting.
“Pissers can only grow if you let them,” someone said quite bluntly.
“If waiting to know is inconvenient for you, tell them politely,” suggested another.
Others agreed it was rude.
“There’s no way I’m going to hold a day for people who can let you down at the last minute,” one person said.
Another wrote: “It just means they’re hoping for a better deal.”
The disgruntled host argued that there is a hidden message he is sending.
“The implication that their time is less important than yours,” she said.
